Silent River

Katarzyna Suchodolska (2nd place. Poetry. Fall 2012 Writing Contest)
“And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.” Leviticus 15:25; King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
The moon has grown—a perfect circle
Shines through the leaves of dry
Palm trees next to my house.
My body grows, like the moon
It has the perfect circles of breasts.
The day the river first came to my body
My mother danced around the house.
I watched the moon that grows and grows
And heard the river flowing.
I ran at dawn towards the creek’s banks
And saw the shepherds with their flock.
You shall not leave, they said and shut
The door.
A river still flows behind my house,
The rest is silence.
Again, again, the moon has grown,
The river flows. They shut the door.
I do not run towards the banks,
The rest is silence.
