Punishable By Death

Onnyx Bei (2nd place. Poetry. Fall 2011 Writing Contest)

Being gay is
as much a choice
as the sun rising from the East

Being gay is
“An abomination,” you say
without consideration

“An abomination,”
you say while enjoying shellfish
and scaleless fish

“Punishable by death,” you say
just like adultery
or working on the sabbath

“Punishable by death,”
like a non virgin woman before marriage
or a child cursing a parent

All an abomination
punishable by death
but who gets to decide

which way the sun will rise?
